This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of adhesive system on different bacterial strains of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus species of carious lesions in dentin of primary teeth. The direct contact test, subculture and agar diffusion technique were performed with the adhesive systems - Clearfil SE Bond, Clearfil SE Protect containing MDPB and Adper Single Bond 2 on 57 different strains of bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus species) extracted from primary teeth. The Kruskal-Wallis test (mean rank) followed by Student-Newman-Keuls test was applied for evaluation of bacterial growth in subculture and comparison between adhesives systems and control. Considering agar diffusion technique, the zones of inhibition were measured in millimeters by the visual method and the descriptive analysis was performed. The results showed that all strains used in the agar diffusion technique was sensitive to primer Clearfil SE Protect (p <0.0001), and the minimum value of inhibition zone was 12 mm similar to that observed for chlorhexidine 0.12% (11 mm). However when performed the contact direct test and subcultures, there was no statistically significant difference among adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Protect vs. Adper Single Bond 2: p = 0.3312; Clearfil SE Protect versus Clearfil SE Bond: p = 0.8714; Clearfil SE Bond vs. Adper Single Bond 2: p = 0.4181).
