The contamination of local water resources, as well as its effects on the biota is one of the major points of discussion and priority to environmental agencies. However the data related to ecological studies of communities, especially water, are still insufficient and scarce in the region. In this context, the objective of this study is to analyze the structure of the macrobenthic community, as well as the factors affecting the process of settlement and community succession in urban streams in the city of Pocos de Caldas, Minas Gerais. In order to investigate the following questions: (1) The macroinvertebrate community preserved urban streams is significantly similar natural areas of the region? (2) What is the required period of colonization on artificial substrate to stabilize the abundance and diversity? (3) The replacement of species involved in ecological succession process is similar to the natural areas? In order to respond to the questions raised about the structure and colonization of the benthic fauna of urban streams this dissertation will be presented in two chapters. Chapter 1 addresses the issue of the importance of preservation of urban streams in the community structure of aquatic insects.
