The set of guidelines known as the New Macroeconomic Consensus, result of the synthesis of several conventional schools of economic thought, has as main measure of inflation control the Regime of Inflation Targets, that is applied between developed and underdeveloped countries since the 1990s. In contemporary Brazil, the Inflation Targets Regime is being questioned because of the economic problems that have plagued the Brazilian economy. A debate between economists favorable to the RMI and economists who advocate an alternative to the adopted regime, occurred between 2011 and 2022 and sharpened the discussion in the public debate.
