Brazil from the 1930’s was a period of an extensive and rich historiographic production towards the Brazilian nation constitution and Brazilian people. Classic authors from our historiography have established themselves with their masterpieces launched in this decade and in the following years, and in that background was when Sérgio Buarque de Holanda’s works, especially “Roots of Brazil”, gained scientific and academic legitimacy, which contributed to perpetuate in the Brazilians’ daily life and unconscious, the idea they have of their country and, in many occasions, assigned to the Iberian heritage, the Brazil’s delay towards the western modern world. This research aimed to raise how certain concepts constructed by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda - which continue to be defended by a whole generation of succeeding scholars but are also criticized by some researchers - are still present in the 2018 books of National Book and Teaching Material Program.
