Dissertação (Mestrado em Economia) - Universidade Federal de Alfenas, Varginha, 2023.https://repositorio.unifal-mg.edu.br/handle/123456789/2390The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze development in the southern region of Minas Gerais for the year 2022, based on the A Identidade Sul Mineira Survey, which is representative of the southern region of Minas Gerais as a whole and also of the municipalities of Alfenas, Poços de Caldas and Varginha. To this end, a composite development index was created based on the Multiple Correspondence Analysis methodology. The creation of a composite development index is based on Sen's (2010) theory that development is multiple and linked to substantive freedoms and capabilities, and therefore the index is formulated by nine indicators. Linked to this discussion are issues of regional development, with a view to analyzing the region's cultural characteristics and history, as well as the inclusion of the right to the city as a human right and the analysis of indicators specific to the region, with guidance on where progress can be made. One of the main results is that the municipality with the highest percentage of population with a Development Index considered High is Varginha, followed by Poços de Caldas, in the South of Minas Gerais and, lastly, Alfenas. This result is also supported by surveys such as the Minas Gerais Social Responsibility Index.
