For the greater effectiveness of preventive, curative and palliative techniques related to the disease, it is important to understand the concept of health by the person with cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the health conception of people with cancer who are or were alcoholics and / or smokers. A qualitative approach was used, using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. We interviewed 20 people with cancer, who are or were alcoholics and / or smokers, about their conception of what is health. Six categories and fifteen subcategories were identified that demonstrated participants' perceptions about health disease. It also emerged in the speeches of the participants knowledge based on common sense and universal values concerning neoplasms and that mark the life of the one who goes through this aggravation. And with this it is verified that it is of paramount importance to study and approach the theme of people's perceptions regarding health and disease, so that this strengthens and adjusts health care.
