dc.description.abstract2Phthalate-based plasticizers, widely used in the poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) industry, have been progressively restricted by international regulations owing to their documented adverse effects on human health and the environment. In this context, the present study aimed to produce furfuryl esters via enzymatic hydroesterification of free fatty acids (FFAs) derived from residual soybean oil (RSO) with furfuryl alcohol, using Eversa® Transform 2.0 lipase (ET2.0) immobilized on four hydrophobic supports, such as fine-particle rice husk (FRH) and coarse-particle rice husk (CRH), octyl-functionalized silica (SiO₂-Octyl), and poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) (PVB), and to evaluate the migration stability of the resulting esters as bio-based plasticizers in PVC films. The synthesis was conducted in a solvent-free system at a 1:1 molar ratio (FFAs:furfuryl alcohol), 40 °C, and 240 rpm. All biocatalysts promoted FFA conversions between 72.2% and 82.9% within 90 min; ET2.0-SiO₂-Octyl achieved the highest conversion (82.9%), while ET2.0-FRH exhibited the highest productivity (0.7 µmol·min⁻¹·mg⁻¹ protein). PVC films plasticized with furfuryl esters (PVC-FE) were subjected to migration tests using 75% (v/v) ethanol as the simulant solvent. PVC-FE showed a migration of 24.04%, a value higher than that observed for the commercial plasticizer dioctyl phthalate (DOP) (5.76%), a behavior attributed to the higher polarity of the furan ring, which promotes interaction with the polar simulant and facilitates plasticizer release from the polymer matrix. These results demonstrate that the furfuryl esters produced via the proposed biocatalytic route hold potential as a renewable alternative to conventional plasticizers, and that reducing migration in polar media, through strategies such as epoxidation, represents a relevant direction for future studies.
