dc.description.abstract2Introduction: Tooth agenesis is a common developmental anomaly that primarily affects third molars, and in these teeth, it has been associated with an evolutionary issue. Aim: This study aims to analyze the prevalence of third molar agenesis in a sample of individuals native to the southern region of Minas Gerais, to compare it with other studies conducted in Brazil and abroad, and to verify whether this prevalence has been increasing in recent years. Methodology: In this retrospective documentary study, data were collected from panoramic radiographs taken between 2014 and 2024 from patients of both sexes, aged 14 to 17 years, from the southern region of Minas Gerais State. The radiographs were obtained from the digital archive of the Radiology Clinic of the Dentistry Program at UNIFAL-MG. Results: Out of a total of 14,246 panoramic radiographs, 395 were selected. The prevalence of agenesis was 12.41%. The most prevalent sex was female, representing 51.02% of the sample. Considering the dental arches, 11.90% of individuals presented absence of at least one third molar in the upper arch and 10.89% in the lower arch. Regarding the sides, 11.39% of individuals had at least one missing third molar on the right side and 11.39% on the left side. The tooth with the highest prevalence of agenesis was the upper right third molar (tooth 18) at 27.47%, followed by the lower left third molar (tooth 38) at 25.27%, the upper left third molar (tooth 28) at 24.18%, and the lower right third molar (tooth 48) at 22.22%. The most frequent occurrences involved agenesis of one or two third molars, corresponding to 5.32% and 4.81%, respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of third molar agenesis in the present study was low (12.41%) compared to other studies analyzed. There was a predominance in females, of tooth 18, and of cases involving one or two third molars, mainly in the upper arch, with equal prevalence on both sides. These findings are consistent with most studies. No increase in the prevalence of agenesis over time was identified based on the studies analyzed.
